We will use the Feldenkrais Method, Experiential Anatomy and other specially-devised material to enter into a physical dialogue with ourselves and the environment in which we are situated. Each class begins with a guided exploration/lecture/dialogue in which the specific theme of the class is introduced through exploring reference movements and looking at associated anatomical details. Then follows a Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement (ATM) class which aims to clarify some aspects of the theme and generates a more general state of self-awareness. The final part of the class is spent in self-directed exploration taking the references movements as a starting point.
Dates: Mon-Fri 30 Nov to 4. Dec. and 7 to 11 Dec
Times: 10.00 until 12.15
Place: Studio 523, TEAK,
Sign up: yhteiset@teak.fi, sign up ends 23 November

I have spent the last five-years developing a body of work called Awareness Perception Presence in which I combine the Feldenkrais Method, Experiential Anatomy and other specially-devised material to enter into a physical dialogue with ourselves and our environment.
Each class begins with a guided exploration/lecture/dialogue in which the specific theme of the class is introduced through movement and associated anatomical details. Next a Feldenkrais (ATM) class which aims to clarify some aspects of the theme. The final part of the class is spent in self-directed exploration taking the references movements as a starting point.
SInce we work alone in these classes, it is possible to open these to anyone who wishes to attend. The Feldenkrais Method classes presented are suitable for anyone and are done in a relaxed atmosphere while the additional material consists of simple activities like crawling, walking and standing.
From 7-9 January we'll repeat some of the classes from the Fish-Body series that I've taught at TQW before and 11-16 January I'll present some new classes that I'm developing that explore the interrelationship of the shoulders and hips.
Dates: Thurs-Sat 7-9 January and Mon-Sat 11-16 January 2010
Times: 10.45 to 12.30 each day

"What exactly is somatics? How does the Feldenkrais Method ® work? And what do they have to do with life and art? In this lecture, Malcolm will explore these questions by taking the perception of differences as a central theme. Delivered in his own amusing and thought provoking style, he will thread together a tapestry of theory, anecdotes, demonstrations and experiments that invite (optional) participation, before opening up to questions from the audience."

A week-long opportunity to study with me. Days are divided between open-level solo exploration morning class and advanced level contact improvisation afternoon workshop. Participation in the workshop includes taking the morning classes.
Malcolm has spent the last five-years developing a body of work called Awareness Perception Presence in which he combines the Feldenkrais Method, Experiential Anatomy and other specially-devised material to enter into a physical dialogue with ourselves and our environment. In this particular series, we'll explore the Fish Body (axial skeleton) taking some of Steve Paxton's Material For The Spine as our reference.
The set material is simply standing and walking so makes no special demands physically.
When are we truly improvising CI and when are we just running through familiar patterns and pathways? As we become more experienced and skilled in the form, how can we keep our dancing fresh and improvisational?
One way is to study how to be present to ourselves and to extend our perception of ourselves. The Awareness Perception Presence morning class series aims to address to these issues. In the context of this workshop, you could think of them as an extended warm-up or preparation to dance CI.
In the afternoon sessions, we'll follow a process that unfolds by exploring a series of simple CI scores designed to interrupt the familiar. We'll also create our own scores, explore some less-common contact technique, watch each other dancing, and dialogue on the improvisational nature of CI.
During the workshop, the exploration of scores will be directed mainly toward the question of improvisation in CI. My experience is that they are interesting to watch and also open up strategies for performing CI. The workshop will therefore culminate in a showing where we will dance some of the scores that we have worked on for an audience. Participation in the workshop showing is not absolutely necessary but strongly encouraged. It will take place on Friday, January 29, 2010 at 8:30 PM
For the afternoon workshop there is a limited number of places, available for participants with at least three years experience of dancing and studying contact improvisation. If you are interested then please write a brief outline of your experience and interest in attending (no more than one side A4).

My interest in contact improvisation is contained in the question: when am I truly improvising ci and when am I just running through familiar patterns and pathways? One way I try stay fresh in my ci practice is to continually research my perception of myself somatically. Since perception and movement are arguably the same thing, then a shift in perception cannot help by cause a change in my movement. Such a shift can awaken my interest and call me into the present to notice what I can of what is going on and into a state that feels improvisational. In this class I'd like to share some of my research into the qualities of bone as a way in to improvising together.
more info: www.contactfestival.fiA workshop for those who love to dance contact improvisation and are interested in exploring somatic approaches to expanding the possibilities of their dancing. We will move between exercises aiming to clarify the sensations which lie at the heart of CI and exploring scores that point towards different types of CI vocabulary.
The idea of this approach is to minimise the teaching of set material (moves, tricks, etc) and instead to maximise the opportunities of participants to discover material for themselves through their own research and exploration. Very simply, I set up calm and simple experiments in which we can experience a range of sensations without any demand to move very much. And then we dance a lot. Often there are unusual rules for the dances. Sometimes there are none and you can improvise freely.

It is easy to forget that we human beings as a species are a work-in-progress. We've only been wearing shoes for around 30,000 or our 250,000 year history. There still much to learn it seems.
In this workshop day, we'll address questions such as, how many feet do we have and where do the feet begin? The answers we seek will be rich experiential ones, rather than the simplistic linguistic ones. We'll try learn a little more of how our feet function in walking and standing, and maybe even in dancing. We'll do that by exploring some funny walks, learning something of functional anatomy both though looking at images and the skeleton, and through guided touch and movement exercises alone and with others.
For the technically minded, particular attention will be paid to exploring the relationship between the navicular, cuboid and talus bones of the foot in particular and the tibia and fibula bones of the lower leg. But don't let the latin names put you off. We'll barely mention them, focusing instead on the sensation of the structures themselves and how they can be intergrated to our sense of ourselves as a whole.
Bring your own questions and anecdotes and be prepared to be surprised. Our feet may be a long way from our eyes, out of sight and out of mind, but for much of our life they are our foundation. A change in their ability to channel weight and support can effect everything above them
