Functional integration (FI) classes are offered as one-to-one sessions which last 60 minutes from when you arrive to when you leave. Your first session may last a bit longer so there's more time for discussing your movement history, what you are interested in improving and anything that you are having difficulty with.
The sessions are carried out with the student fully clothed, except for their shoes, and like ATM classes they are most often given with the student lying down on the back, side or front, only this time on a special table that is soft but firm. Again there are also classes which can be given with the student sitting or standing. At times, various props (pillows, rollers, blankets ) are used in an effort to support the person's body configuration or to facilitate certain movements.
The ideas and strategies employed are the same as in ATM classes but here it is generally the practitioner who moves the student through gentle non-invasive touch. In Functional Integration, the teacher develops a lesson custom-tailored to your unique configuration at that particular moment, relating to a desire, intention or need you have. The teacher will guide you through a touch dialogue though which you will come to recognise both how you move already and receive suggestions for new patterns. The result is more choice and flexibility in how you move.
Feldenkrais likened to Functional Integration to partner dancing or spoken conversation. Through gentle touch, the practitioner partially discloses or hints at a functional motor pattern, and the student responds with subtle, novel neuromuscular cues. Gradually, the student self-assembles mostly at a subconscious level a new neuromuscular organization of movement that translates into an altered active performance. At the end of a session the practitioner helps the student to integrate the learning in every day life through related movements based upon the lesson's functional theme and follow-up suggestions.
To maximize the benefits of Functional integration, it is recommended to have at least three sessions within a relatively short time (two weeks) - to deal effectively with a particular movement problem then a course of ten sessions is recommended. Like ATM, to maximise the benefits you should try to organise yourself so that you have no stressful appointments immediately after a session.
