We will study how people choose to move and place themselves in space as time passes. We do this in a simple way using perceptual skills as the base.
We will examine how to make choices inside the moving, exploring how to allow the body to choose as well as the mind. And how to observe the choice making of others and in the process gain some clues as to how this can be read.
The working pattern will be first to explore and clarify a perticular perceptual principle or focus in relation to our personal movement (movement exploration) and then take this into a group situation and see what happens (improvisation).
The intention is that what you learn through your experience in the workshop can inform your choices later in choreography and stage direction. It can also form the basis for performing improvisation.
Open to anyone who is prepared to explore movement - no special skills required.

I like to describe the application of somatic movement practices to the performing arts as a kind of "invisible technique". What I mean by that is that while they do not necessarily teach any material that you could perform, they can have a big effect on how you perform (performance presence) and the ability to learn new skills. In these "Awareness Perception Presence" classes, we will work mainly with the Feldenkrais Method and Experiential Anatomy.
I am particularly interested in how the seemingly internal changes that result are mirrored in the way we perceive the world around us and how the world perceives us. I also offer material that highlights how the enhanced self-awareness and perception that emerges from exploring these somatic techniques can support performance presence.

In these three weekends we'll explore what our feet and legs mean
to us and how they relate to other parts of ourselves. To do that
we'll learn something of functional anatomy both through looking
at images and the skeleton, and through guided touch and movement
exercises alone and with others. We'll also share and discuss stories,
impressions and observations of ourselves and others.
The idea behind BodySchool is that by increasing our physical self-knowledge
and through it improving our ability to sense and feel ourselves
as we move and think, we learn fundamental lessons that can be
carried over to enhance and support our whole lives. Body
School is a pedagogical form which is open to all
and situated in an environment where the only goal
is learning.
Kolmen viikonlopun kurssilla tutkimme jalkoja,
osa-alueilla.
Classes are suitable for anyone with curiosity about what it is
to be a whole human, no matter what age or physical abilities
Kurssi sopii kaikille, jotka ovat kiinnostuneita
tutkimaan ihmisyyttä kokonaisvaltaisesti, ikään ja fyysiseen
kuntoon katsomatta. Kurssikielenä on englanti.

The course is an invitation to focus on our experience of our bodies with the overall aim of deepening our relationship to our whole selves, body and mind. We'll work with some simple exercises from drawn from my experience of the somatic disciplines of the Feldenkrais Method, Body Mind Centering, the work of Elsa Gindler, Authentic Movement and Post-Modern Dance.
Some of the exercises will involve exploring movements, some will involve hands-on work and some will involve observing each other's movements. There will also be time to reflect on your experiences both alone and with others and space to explore any questions that might arise as a group.
The movement material will be suitable for all body shapes and types. An important premise of my work is that you work with what feels comfortable, pleasurable and easy to do, that way you can remain relaxed and therefore open to sensing what it is that you are actually doing.

Contact improvisation is at its most satisfying, both to dance and to watch, when the dancers respond effortlessly, in the moment, to the stimuli and moving puzzles that contact presents. There is a wealth of technique present, but it is as if it becomes invisible in the dancing.
These 'invisible' techniques are about preparing ourselves to dance, developing and fine-tuning our natural movement by working, in detail and with concentrated awareness, on specific aspects of our physicality. In doing this, we can recognise our habits - useful and not so useful - and open new pathways and connections, sowing seeds of experience which can grow in the body unconsciously when our focus shifts back to the whole as we dance.
In this work a state of relaxation and calmness is fostered so we can let our curiosity and awareness guide us to the easiest ways to solve these moving puzzles. We'll aim explore: how to give weight and receive support; how to make and break contact; how to roll and slide; how to steer momentum; how to take control of and resolve falls; how to lift and be lifted; and more...
